I just replaced my alt. again a couple months ago so it is still fresh in my mind. Here's another tip that I neglected to include in the write up I did: Position yourself with feet facing front of car as you said, then use your left hand with a ratchet and socket on the pivot bolt to thread it so it is JUST FLUSH with coming out the back side of the alternator ears. Once you've got it flush, then finagle the nut onto the back with your right hand from the back side so the flanges on the nut are positioned over the triangular part of the opening. Then while holding it there, continue threading the pivot bolt in with your left hand until you can feel the flanges "grab". If you thread the pivot bolt too far through beforehand, and then try to put the nut on, you will never be able to get the flanges on the nut to grab hold because the nut will be too far away from the alternator and the flanges won't be able to self tighten on it.
